Community Safety

Southwest Calgary is considered a relatively calm part of the city with safe and well-maintained neighbourhoods.

Street lighting, regular municipal upkeep, and active community associations help maintain livability and reduce nuisances. For renters, this can foster a sense of security, especially in neighbourhoods where apartment buildings are well-maintained and designed for long-term occupancy.

Southwest Calgary is served by multiple Calgary Fire and EMS stations as well as Rockyview General Hospital, which offers inpatient care and emergency services.

Getting Around the City

  • Commute Times: From central Southwest communities like Mayfair, Kingsland, and Haysboro, driving to downtown generally takes roughly 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic. For people working in the east end of the city (along the Glenmore corridor or in east-end industrial areas), quick access to major roadways makes the daily commute manageable.
  • Transportation Infrastructure: Most of the Southwest benefits from connectivity to major roadways, including Macleod Trail, Glenmore Trail, Crowchild Trail, and the Stoney Trail ring road. These major routes provide convenient access across Calgary and beyond. Public transit is also broadly available in the quadrant with CTrain (Red Line) stations running along Macleod Trail and nearby corridors, and frequent buses linking neighbourhoods across the quadrant.
  • Walkability & Bikeability: Walkability varies by neighbourhood. Areas closer to downtown, commercial corridors, and shopping centres tend to make it easier to run errands on foot, while the heavily residential pockets rely on access to public transit or a car. That said, Southwest Calgary benefits from a growing network of pathways and bikeways. City planners are working on improving neighbourhood bikeway routes in several communities, including Haysboro, Windsor Park, and Woodlands. The new pathways will provide safer travel options for walkers and cyclists.

Education

Southwest Calgary offers residents a range of educational and childcare options across its communities. Residents are served by public and Catholic schools operated by the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.

  • Childcare & Early Learning: There are many licensed daycare and preschool options throughout the quadrant, including the Thornhill Child Care at the Haysboro Community Centre.
  • Elementary Schools: Elementary schools are well distributed throughout the area, with options like Windsor Park School and Louis Riel School serving grades K to 6.
  • High Schools: Henry Wise Wood High School in Kelvin Grove serves many Southwest neighbourhoods and offers advanced placement options through the GATE program.
  • Post-Secondary: Students and adult learners can enjoy straightforward commuting to Mount Royal University, alongside transit and driving options to SAIT and the University of Calgary.

We strive to process all applications within a few days. If your application is approved and you’re ready to move ahead, a lease will be generated, and you can start counting down the days until you move in.

When moving day arrives, it’s essential that you attend in person. You’ll be greeted by an Avenue Living Representative who will be there to welcome you to your new home and give you the keys to your suite. You’ll need to review the condition of your suite, sign the Accommodation Inspection Report, Download the Avenue Living Resident Portal app, and set up your account. After that, you’ll be ready to start unloading and getting settled! Consult our resident move-in checklist so you’ll know just what to expect.
