A new playground and play area for Delton Townhomes in Edmonton is a shining example of our commitment to enhance the resident experience through investment in our properties.
And for residents of Delton Townhomes, especially the children, they're thrilled to have the new playground area.
"All the kids here are super happy and excited to have it here," says Sobia Shakil, Residential Portfolio Manager at the Delton Townhomes complex.
About 70 per cent of the resident townhomes in Delton Townhomes are young, multicultural families, according to Deanna Irwin, Leasing Specialist, who works out of the Delton Townhomes' on-site office.
"There's a bunch of schools within walking distance. So, there's always a lot of kids out playing," says Deanna. "There's a common greenspace within the townhome property and kids would always be out playing there. We had the idea that it might be nice to install a playground and a soccer field. We made that a reality and it's been super successful.
"The kids really love it there and it's so wonderful to go walking around and seeing everyone playing and enjoying it."
Delton Townhomes, which is located just north of the Yellowhead on 82nd Street, has 280 rental townhomes. It is Avenue Living Communities' largest rental property in Edmonton.
Prior to the new playground, the area was simply grass.
"It was like it was made for it. It's perfect," says Deanna.
"We put in a playground. It's not just a basic playground. It's a well-built playground that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. It has a little climbing wall, several swings, slides, bars and more. On the other side of that main area we just installed two soccer nets."
The playground area was completed at the end of May after a couple of weeks of building it. Everyone pitched in, including some of our Maintenance Associates, so it really showcased our In It Together mindset.
Before the playground idea came to fruition, as always, we were learning and discovering new ways to create a sense of community.
"It gives people a lot of value for where they're living. Somewhere they feel safe and comfortable. Building a sense of community is huge," says Deanna. "While the community feeling was already present because the kids play together, and the parents know each other, we wanted to cultivate that even more by making an investment that gives back to the community and to the residents.
"The playground gives them a place to play, a place to get to know each other. In the long-term, it just made sense to do for the community. The great thing with Avenue Living Communities is we're open to ideas. Any idea you have you can come talk to your manager. They love hearing new innovative plans. For example, we are also creating community gardens in some of our properties. To be successful, you have to create space for everyone."
