For more than five years, Avenue Living has been working to transform an aging tower in downtown Edmonton into a model of modern, sustainable living. The building was taken back to its concrete core and reimagined from the ground up.

Now stands The SunRise, a newly retrofitted, 12-storey high-rise that adds 179 rental suites to the city’s growing downtown. Designed for comfort and contemporary living, the suites feature open-concept layouts filled with natural light and modern finishes.

The SunRise is also home to a record-breaking feature. With over 2,000 solar panels installed on its exterior, the building holds the Guinness World Record for the largest solar panel artwork.

Standing 26 metres (85 feet) tall, the mural is titled “The Land We Share” was created by Lance Cardinal, a local Indigenous artist who wanted to honour the cultural roots of the neighbourhood.

"I'm excited to bring First Nations and Chinese representation to this beautiful building," says Cardinal.

"To honour both cultures, we were inspired by the animals of the seven sacred grandfather teachings of the Cree tradition and the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. This mural depicts these creatures living together in unity — seeing each other and sharing the same space within one harmonious community."

With Edmonton’s population increasing by more than 100,000 people in 2024 — a 5.73 per cent jump — The SunRise adds much-needed rental housing to the city’s core. The project delivers attainable housing options that meet the needs of a growing and diverse population.

"The SunRise is more than a building, it’s a statement of what’s possible when sustainability, innovation, and cultural respect come together," explains Max Graham, Chief Operating Officer at Avenue Living.

The project has already made a strong impression on the community. Kathryn Luu, Director of the Chinatown Business Improvement Area and board member of the Chinatown Transformation Collaborative, says the redevelopment has brought new energy to the area.

"The renewal of this building has been nothing short of incredible. Avenue Living has turned this property into an incredible new landmark for the city of Edmonton," says Luu. "This change has reinvigorated our community and the neighbourhood. We are excited to have another opportunity to celebrate our community's diversity, history, and people."
